One bit graphics
If 1 bit is used for each pixel, then there only two possible alternatives - 0 and 1 - and therefore only two colours. Click the pixels on the 8 x 8 grid on the left to switch between the two colours. See if you can create numbers and letters of the alphabet using these two colours.
If 2 bits are used for each pixel, then there four possible alternatives - 00, 01, 10 and 11 - and therefore there are four possible colours. Click the pixels on the 8 x 8 grid on the left to switch between the four colours. See if you can create any interesting patterns using these four colours.

Well done! They are all correct!
Using three bits per pixel would allow 8 colours. The colours used in this activity are shown at the right. Enter all the possible alternatives (e.g. 101)  in the box above and click the Submit button to find the colour associated with that number. Write the numbers in decimal in the boxes by their colours at the right and then click the Check answer button to see if you are correct.
Sorry! some of them are incorrect.
